Recommendations about global survey
Only Susan, Tezira and Ewen reviewed the survey report. Susan's top recommendations:
- Find ways to promote the series better, more regularly using senior staff and champions, and targeting ILRI's new and younger staff as well.
- Reduce the series to once every two months rather than every month to give us time to go through the presentation with the presenters; and we cancel any presenters that don't manage to deliver for a wider audience in our previews of their presentations; bottom line: we make sure that every presentation reaches a minimum standard of interest for wide audiences.
- We STRONGLY recommend that most presenters NOT use Powerpoint, unless they can prove to us that it is a winner. Otherwise, we should use more engaging kinds of structures.
Tezira's top recommendations:
- Get scientists to facilitate
- Reduce the frequency to bimonthly, and
- Prepare a one-page synopsis for circulation/reference
Ewen's top recommendations:
- More interactive seminars – no lecture any longer
- DDG to get in charge / Guerrilla team to get promotion with managers (short interviews about why they haven’t come)
- Pull back seminars to every 2 months
Generally we agree that we want more interesting (interactive, well presented, without PPT) seminars that happen less frequently. There has been much variation in these seminars, we need to go back to the substance and rationale of these seminars. We should involve the DDGs in this in the context of the new ILRI strategy. We should at least pick their brains for ideas of seminars and perhaps also to organize/coordinate the series of seminars. Perhaps we could chat with them on Skype once per month. ACTION: Ewen and Vish will talk to John & Suzanne prior to the skype meeting ACTION: Ewen to email Vish, Angela, Grace, Tadelle to send their top recommendations And we wait for the chat with the DDGs before we get back to staff on what we do with recommendations from the survey
Next seminar: Rob Burnett's seminar
Angela talked to Rob and he's ready to do a seminar. He sent his photo and is working on the presentation. Rob wants to talk about interactive hybrid design for Shujaaz FM etc. Rob will get back to Angela about his ideas for this seminar. Angela could ask him what livestock stories they have and to organise the seminar around this... ACTION: Angela to get back to Rob with the list of criteria for the LLT seminar + ask Rob to cover his seminar from a livestock angle.
Other upcoming seminars ( see list of planned & tentative seminars)

[11:21:37] Ewen Le Borgne: Susan's top 3 recommendations:
[11:21:37] Ewen Le Borgne: (1) Find ways to promote the series better, more regularly using senior staff and champions, and targetting ILRI's new and younger staff as well.
(2) Reduce the series to once every two months rather than every month to give us time to go through the presentation with the presenters; and we cancel any presenters that don't manage to deliver for a wider audience in our previews of their presentations; bottom line: we make sure that every presentation reaches a minimum standard of interest for wide audiences.
(3) We STRONGLY recommend that most presenters NOT use Powerpoint, unless they can prove to us that it is a winner. Otherwise, we should use more engaging kinds of structures.
[11:22:31] Ewen Le Borgne: From Ewen
- 1. More interactive seminars – no lecture any longer
- 2. DDG to get in charge / Guerrilla team to get promotion with managers (short interviews about why they haven’t come)
- 3. Pull back seminars to every 2 months
[11:23:02] Tezira Lore: Tezira's top three recommendations: (1) Get scientists to facilitate (2) reduce the frequency to bimonthly, and (3) prepare a one-page synopsis for circulation/reference

[11:27:55] Ewen Le Borgne: What we're saying: Make seminars more interesting, reduce the frequency to one seminar every 2 months.
[11:28:38] Ewen Le Borgne: Should we continue with these Livestock Live Talk seminars
• Yes - just the way it is: 54.2%
[11:28:46] Ewen Le Borgne: • Yes - but less frequently (please specify how often in the comments box): 22.9%
[11:29:27] Ewen Le Borgne: We need to think about this whole series which has a huge deal of variation
[11:29:56] Ewen Le Borgne: We should go back and see if we can get the DDGs to take this on board and organise it in the context of the new ILRI strategy
[11:30:31] Ewen Le Borgne: This sounds interesting to get science out but it's been hard to get their attention on even GMO-type issues
[11:30:58] Ewen Le Borgne: What we need is for them to be on the committee to get involved in ideas - or perhaps 1x/month to skype with them
[11:31:28] Ewen Le Borgne: Vish - your connection's breaking up (can't hear much right now)
[11:32:19] Tezira Lore: I can't hear anything...
[11:34:08] Ewen Le Borgne: Perhaps we can skype with John & Suzanne and Shirley and ask for their advice on how we can proceed with these seminars
[11:34:16] Vish Nene (pashaleo): sure
[11:34:33] Ewen Le Borgne: ACITON: Ewen and Vish will talk to John & Suzanne prior to the skype meeting

[11:37:44] Vish Nene (pashaleo): power outage
